Learn how to build a strong board with diverse opinions and experiences. A board lacking in a broad demographic mix, including age, may miss out fundraising and networking opportunities. This panel will teach you how to attract and inspire the next generation of board members.  MEET OUR PANEL: Amy Blaker, Caseworker for Congressman Pete Visclosky Amy Blaker is a federal caseworker for Congressman Pete Visclosky, assisting constituents in the First Congressional District with agencies such as the Social Security Administration and the Department of Veterans Affairs.  Amy was former Regional Director for the Indiana Democratic Party on a statewide campaign.  She received a B.A. in Communications from Purdue University and is currently attending Indiana University Northwest in pursuit of a Master’s degree in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Amy serves on the Board of Directors for Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana and also serves as member of the Administration Committee.  She is an active member of the Munster Junior Woman’s Club, a service group that raises funds for other organizations and volunteers with agencies in the community, such as Northwest Indiana Food Bank, Honor Flight and Haven House.  Kathleen Szot, Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) As senior manager of customer communications and marketing at Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO), Kathleen is responsible for crafting creative, multi-media strategies to connect with NIPSCO’s approximately one million customers. In this role, Szot contributes to the electric and natural gas utility’s brand management, advertising, social media and market research initiatives. Before joining NIPSCO, Kathleen worked in agency and in-house public relations and marketing, representing a wide range of organizations. Kathleen holds a B.A.in Economics and Art History from the University of Notre Dame. Rob Thorgren, Thorgren Tool & Molding Co., Inc. Rob Thorgren was born and raised in Valparaiso, IN. Growing up in a philanthropic household, Rob learned the importance of giving back at an early age. His parents were involved locally with many organizations and took pride in serving the community in many capacities. After graduation from Indiana University, Rob returned to Valpo to work in the family business. During those early years at Thorgren Tool & Molding Rob was fortunate enough to serve on many boards himself. It was this early experience of board service that led Rob to want to be as involved as possible on each board he served. Each board experience was unique and provided a varying degree of commitment but one notion seemed to resonate with Rob throughout those experiences: The amount of effort you put into serving a board of directors will directly reflect what you are able to gain from that experience. Today Rob serves on committees and boards with an appreciation for the work each member contributes and believes that any organization with a strong board and executive staff will stand the test of time. Matt Welter, The Matt Evans Team at RE/MAX Pace Realty Valparaiso Matt Welter from Valparaiso, 5th generation in Valpo. I am the Principal at Wayne Enterprises, a Real Estate Investment firm, and COO at PDP as well as a residential and commercial REALTOR with the Matt Evans Team at RE/MAX. I currently serve as the Secretary of the BoD at Dunebrook where I've served on the board for 3 years. I was president of United Ways Young Leaders United and recently joined the BoD at Porter County United Way.   Matt Glaros, Meyers Glaros Group Matt Glaros is the Practice Leader of Meyers Glaros Group’s Employee Benefit Division. He advises local businesses, towns, schools and unions on their employee benefit options. He is also called upon by insurance carriers to help craft and develop new products to bring to the business community. Matt is extremely active in the Northwest Indiana non-profit arena, he is a board member on the following organizations: Legacy Foundation, Campagna Academy, OneRegion and the Valparaiso Family YMCA. He was one the founding member of Emerge South Shore, a Northwest Indiana young professionals group that existed between 2010-2013. He was also involved in bringing the first TEDx Event to Northwest Indiana in 2014. Matt lives in Valparaiso with his wife and three kids (with a fourth on the way).
